The new stretch-a-roo

Thanks to amazing supporters like
you, the Food Bank ended 2011 on a
high note, with year-end donations at
a heart-warming (and sometimes
heart-pounding) level.

That means that, thanks to you, we’re off to a great start in 2012. And getting off to a great start is extra-important this year, which promises more challenges than we have ever faced before. Food prices are going up. Government support has been slashed. Un- and under-employment continue to plague our communities.

So we’re making a New Year’s resolution to get even better at what we do best–stretching a buck. Right now, we can distribute $10 worth of food for every $1 we receive. But this year, we’re going to stretch your donated dollars even further. (Yes, it is possible! Stay tuned for more details on our ground-breaking, hunger-busting new plan.)

42,000 pounds of fresh produce gleaned in 2011

It was a great year for growing, according to Volunteer Coordinator Dena Rogers. Gleaning (picking surplus crops after the main harvest) brought about 42,000 pounds of fresh produce into the Food Bank – roughly double the average year’s total. Read more

Lean if not mean.
This year, because of reduced government support and higher food costs, we anticipate greater need than ever for emergency food. One way we are preparing to respond to this growing need is by adapting ‘Lean process improvement’ techniques. Read more
